Day and Night Theme Activities
Here are easy and quick Day and Night themed toddler activities for busy moms and dads. You’ll find enough activity ideas to help you through a full week of Day and Night play.
Light it Up
- Flashlight
- A dark room
Explore the differences between day and night by focusing on light and dark. Begin by turning off the lights in a room to create darkness. Then use a flashlight to mimic the light we experience during the day. Shine the flashlight around the room. Discuss what you can now see clearly in the beam of light. Notice you can now see objects, shadows, and details that were hidden in the dark. Compare this to what we can naturally see during the day when sunlight illuminates everything around us. Talk about how at night, without light sources like flashlights or lamps, many things remain hidden. While during the day, the sun provides natural light, allowing us to see our surroundings easily. This activity helps children grasp the concept of light and dark as it relates to day and night.
Day and Night Visit
- A favorite outdoor nature spot
- A daytime walk
- A nighttime walk
Visit a favorite nature spot during the day to observe the vibrant life around you. Notice the bright sunlight, the colors of the plants, and the activity of animals like birds or squirrels. Pay attention to the sounds of nature, such as the rustling of leaves, chirping of birds, or buzzing of insects. Later, return to the same spot at night, when the environment changes completely. In the darkness, you might hear the sounds of nocturnal creatures like owls or crickets. You may see the soft glow of moonlight on the plants. Compare how the sights, sounds, and overall atmosphere differ between day and night. Reflect on how the natural world transforms after sunset.
Day and Night Collage
- Large piece of white paper
- Yellow, orange and red paper.
- Black, gray and brown pieces of paper.
- Pictures of daytime and nighttime activities
- Glue
Take a large piece of white paper and fold it in half. Open it back up and set aside. Take the yellow orange and red papers and allow your child to rip them up into small pieces. Gather the pieces together and set aside. Next do the same with the black , gray and brown papers. Retrieve the white paper. On the left half of the paper have your child glue down the pieces of brightly colored yellow, red and orange papers. This is the “day” side of your collage. On the right half of the white paper, have your child glue down the pieces of black, brown and gray colored paper. This is the “night” side of your collage. Next, cut out pictures of daytime activities and animals. Items might include a sun, clouds, squirrel or flowers. Have your child find the day side of the collage and glue them down. Repeat with other objects and animals for the nighttime side. These objects might include a moon, stars, an owl or a bat.
Walk on the Moon
- Variety of different size pillows
- Large sheet or two
- Sponges
- Rubber bands or string or tape
Create a fun moonscape for your child to explore! Start by placing a variety of pillows of different sizes on the floor to create uneven terrain. Cover the pillows with a large sheet to represent the surface of the moon. Next, make “moon boots” by attaching sponges to the bottoms of your child’s feet using rubber bands, string or tape. Let your child walk across the soft, bumpy moonscape, feeling like an astronaut exploring the moon’s surface!
Light and Dark
- Blanket
- Flashlight
The idea with this activity is to experience light and dark. Start with your child in a lighted room. Then sit together under a thick blanket. One that blocks the light is ideal. Notice how the room is now darker. Remove the blanket and experience the light. Repeat dark and light as appropriate to begin establishing the concept of opposites. You can further explore light and dark. Begin with a dark room with the flashlight turned off. Then turn the flashlight on to create light. Continue to turn the flashlight on and off. Bonus experience points if it is a flashlight your toddler can switch on and off themselves!
