Search for the Leprechaun’s Gold!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day Week! (Might as well milk the holiday for all it is worth. We are all struggling to find a focus these days!) Here are two simple Leprechaun themed activities you can do at home with the kids, using items you already have!
Make sure you check out the Clever Tom and the Leprechaun read aloud first!
Search for gold just like Tom!
This is a fun game to play with everyone in the family! Take any tiny object that can fit completely in your hand without being seen. This could be a tiny eraser, a pebble that looks like gold, a small crumpled piece of paper (you could use yellow paper or color gold onto a piece) or anything else you can think of. Gather three or more people. One person is the “seeker”. They leave the room or cover their eyes. The remaining people are the “hiders”. The hiders decide who is going to hide the “gold”. They put it in their hands. Make sure the gold cannot be seen when you put your hands in your lap!
ALL the hiders then fold their hands in their laps. The seeker can now return to the room or uncover their eyes. The seeker takes a guess at who has the gold. If you are hiding the gold stay calm and try not to give it away! See if the seeker can get it on the first try! Take turns being the “seeker”. May the luck of the Irish be with you!
Can you remember which Boliaun bush the gold is under? Test your memory!
This is a fun memory game where you can see if you are luckier than Tom! Take two pieces of paper and cut them into eight even pieces each. For a total of 16 pieces.
Draw a boliaun bush on the back of each piece. Don’t forget to add the red garter to trick your opponent! (This leprechaun forgot to tie a garter on one of the bushes- can you find it?)
Pick two pieces to draw a pot of gold on the flip side.
Lay out all 16 pieces, boliaun bush side up, in neat rows as seen in the picture above. You are ready to start playing! Play proceeds just like the classic game Memory. Take turns flipping over two pieces at a time searching for the gold. Make sure you replace the pieces back into their original spots after looking at them. During your turn you may only flip over two cards! Then play moves to the next player. In this version of the game, you never remove any cards from the board. The first player to find both gold pieces, in one turn, wins!
